Municipal Elections Municipal elections in Alberta occur every three years on the third Monday in October. The next municipal election in Alberta will take place on October 18, 2010. Polling Stations Open – 10:00am – 8:00pm Date of Nomination Day - Monday, September 20, 2010 Nomination papers must be received at the County office (3755-43 Avenue) between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon on nomination day, and must be accompanied by a cash, certified cheque, or money order deposit. Nomination Form Candidate Information Package is now available Candidate Eligibility A person may be nominated as a candidate on nomination day: Ø is at least 18 years old; Ø is a Canadian citizen; Ø has resided in Alberta for the six consecutive months immediately preceding Ø election day; Ø is a resident of the local jurisdiction and the ward, if any, for the six Ø consecutive months immediately preceding nomination day; and Ø is not otherwise ineligible or disqualified. Elector - Eligibility to Vote A person is eligible to vote in an election if: Ø the person is at least 18 years old; Ø the person is a Canadian citizen; Ø the person has resided in Alberta for the six consecutive months immediately Ø preceding Election Day; and in the area on election day. Rules of Residence A person may be a resident of only one place at a time for the purposes of voting under the Act. Ø If a person has more than one residence in Alberta, that person shall, designate the person’s place of residence in accordance with the following factors in the following order of priority o Address shown on drivers’ licence o Address shown on income tax correspondence o Address to where mail is delivered and picked up Ø The residence of a person is the place where he or she lives and sleeps and to which, when absent, intends to return. Ø A person does not lose residence by leaving home for a temporary purpose. Ø If a person leaves the area with the intention of making a residence elsewhere, the person loses residence within the area. Ø A student who o attends an educational institution within or outside Alberta, o temporarily rents accommodation for the purpose of attending an educational institution, and o has family members who are resident in Alberta and with whom the student ordinarily resides when not attending an educational institution, is deemed to reside with those family members.
